Solution to Puzzle L-5.  VISIT TO EUROPE

Harry, Jill, Bert, Alice, and Vic went to visit Europe last summer.  Each of the visited three of the following countries: France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and Netherlands.

To solve this puzzle, create a table below with Y representing the countries visited, and X representing the countries not visited.

Alice and Jill visited Germany.

Vic was the only one who visited the Netherlands.

  France Britain Germany Italy Netherlands
Harry         X
Jill     Y   X
Bert         X
Alice     Y   X
Vic         Y

Harry did not visit Italy.  Therefore, we now know the three countries he visited.

  France Britain Germany Italy Netherlands
Harry Y Y Y X X
Jill     Y   X
Bert         X
Alice     Y   X
Vic         Y

Since three of them visited Germany, we know Bert and Vic did not visit Germany.  We also know the three countries Bert visited.

  France Britain Germany Italy Netherlands
Harry Y Y Y X X
Jill     Y   X
Bert Y Y X Y X
Alice     Y   X
Vic     X   Y

Two of them visited France.

  France Britain Germany Italy Netherlands
Harry Y Y Y X X
Jill X   Y   X
Bert Y Y X Y X
Alice X   Y   X
Vic X   X   Y

From the table, we know the remaining countries Jill, Alice and Vic visited.

  France Britain Germany Italy Netherlands
Harry Y Y Y X X
Jill X Y Y Y X
Bert Y Y X Y X
Alice X Y Y Y X
Vic X Y X Y Y

Therefore, we conclude that:

Harry visited France, Great Britain and Germany.

Jill visited Italy, Great Britain and Germany.

Bert visited France, Great Britain and Italy.

Alice visited Italy, Great Britain and Germany.

Vic visited The Netherlands, Great Britain and Italy.
